The way that I approach neck and shoulder pain in my clients is to begin with the assumption that it is caused by too much thinking and can be relieved by giving the client an option for relaxation of the body and calming of the mind.
My background includes several years of Buddhist mindfulness meditation which I have adapted into the session I outline below.
Begin by asking your client to focus on their inbreath and outbreath by counting each cycle. The next stage is to place your hands on the clients shoulders and begin channelling Reiki energy into the area physically at the shoulder area but energetically described as the throat chakra. This may take a couple of minutes after which I move one of my hands to the clients chest area and begin to channel energy into the heart chakra at the centre of the chest.
At each stage I am watching my clients breathing and posture to gauge feedback from the session and adjusting my energy flow or the position of my hands (on the body if male, or about an inch away from the chest if the client is female.
After a couple of minutes at the chest level I begin to channel energy into the third eye area at the front of the head and at the back of the head (base of skull) for another couple of moments.
If required I will again move to the neck and shoulders to finish the healing session or briefly hold each of my clients hands and guide their attention back into the real world by once again requesting that they focus on their inbreath and outbreath.
I approach these sessions informally but each includes a request for honest feedback. When I do meet somebody who wants to have a session with me I make it clear that the results are not guaranteed although I do normally expect people to have at least one good nights sleep (feedback from these 10 minute unformal sessions so far is up to six weeks of better quality sleep.
