Introduction to Podiatry/Chiropody

Posted on October 5, 2021 By Arewa Lanre

A podiatrist or chiropodist is a specialist who treats patients with common foot or lower limb problems like ingrown toenails and bunions. While many people don’t know the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist, know that the two terms refer to the same professional. Actually, “podiatry” is a fresh term given to the popular term “chiropody”. The new term was created and assigned in 1993. The professionals treat foot problems and have the same qualifications.

Whether it’s a chiropodist or a podiatrist, know that the role of the doctors is to help you take good care of yourself, especially your feet. They will give you advice so you can opt for the right type of shoes to wear. In addition, these pros can treat routine foot issues, such as ingrown toenails and fungal. Apart from this, they can treat athlete’s foot, cracked heels, smelly feet, verrucas, corns and calluses, just to name a few. They can help you get relief from diabetic foot and foot ulcers.

How Do A Chiropodists treat their patients?

If you have an issue related to your feet, we suggest that you get in touch with a chiropodist as soon as you can. The doctor will help you get rid of calluses from your feet. Moreover, if you have nail infection or fungal, they will help you trim your nails. Of course, they will give you professional advice as to how you can take care of yourself.

If you don’t know the type of shoes you should put on, your podiatric will give you suggestions. For instance, if you have flat feet or your feet have arches, you may want to get advice from an experienced podiatrist. They can give you support based on your needs and problems so that you can put on the right type of shoes and feel comfortable.

They may recommend orthotics (customized insoles) in order to treat the symptoms of biomechanical issues. Typically, the insoles can be used to treat fallen arches as well as flat feet. Apart from this, they can also help you with many other conditions.

Most podiatrists stress the importance of “prevention is better than cure” instead of asking people to go for surgery. As far as treating foot pain is concerned, they ask patients to take care of themselves, and ask them to put on the right footwear and use orthotic inserts.

It’s also important to note that chiropodists can help with biomechanics as well. They treat problems that may arise because of the way your joints and muscles function. Therefore, if you have any of the symptoms mentioned above, we suggest that you visit a good podiatry clinic in your area.

Actually, most health conditions that are associated with feet are caused by poor alignment. These issues may cause pain that is linked with your hips and lower back.

In short, if you have any of the foot problems discussed in this article, we suggest that you get in touch with a good podiatrist today.
